At a televised press conference on Monday, June 17, Behrouz Kamalvandi, spokesman for the Iranian nuclear agency, said that within ten days Iran would break the nuclear deal that Iran signed with several world powers in 2015. He also said that Iran needs uranium which is up to 20 percent enriched, which is not far below weapon quality, writes the Times of Israel.

Under the nuclear deal, Iran can produce and store up to 300 kilograms of uranium, which is enriched with an enrichment rate of up to 3.67 percent. They have to export the remaining uranium. However, Iran stopped exports in May, in an attempt to pressure European countries to protect them from US sanctions. Therefore, Iran is now in the process of exceeding the 300 kilos allowed by the agreement.

The United States withdrew from the agreement in May last year, while imposing sanctions on Iran. China, Russia and several European countries have since tried to keep the agreement alive, but the message from the Iranian nuclear agency suggests that the country is now determined to break the agreement. Following Iran’s announcement on Monday, several European countries immediately went out and asked Iran to stick to the agreement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is asking the international community to impose sanctions on Iran if it stores more uranium than allowed.

“If [Iran] implements its threats and violates the nuclear agreement, the international community should immediately impose sanctions, as previously agreed.” Said Netanyahu about the threats from the Islamic Republic.

If Iran enriches uranium with a 20 percent enrichment rate, the road to a 90 percent enrichment rate will be short. This means that they will be able to produce nuclear weapons. It is completely out of the question that a country that threatens to annihilate Israel can gain access to nuclear weapons, Netanyahu has previously said. He has also threatened to use military force to halt Iran’s nuclear program. Today he repeated the message.

“Israel will not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons,” Netanyahu said

In April last year, he presented evidence that Iran has a nuclear weapons program.

– The nuclear deal with Iran is based on lies. On Iranian lies and deceptions, Netanyahu said as he presented the evidence for Iran’s secret weapons program.
