Historic Israeli gold at the European Fencing Championships

Israeli fencer Yuval Freilich won the gold medal at the European Fencing Championships in Düsseldorf, Germany, writes Times of Israel.

Freilich, who is No. 40 in the world, managed to defeat Italian Andrea Santarelli, who is No. 13 in the world, in the final.

The two ended the first third of the match with 3: 3, but then Freilich took the lead and ended the match with 15: 9.

Freilich is the first Israeli fencer to win a European Championship.

Freilich, 24, grew up in the Neve Daniel settlement. He is the son of Australian immigrants and has been fencing since he was 5 years old. He won two gold medals at the teen championships in 2014 and 2015 and a silver medal in the U-23 category in 2016.

“It’s the most incredible feeling,” he said in a Facebook interview with the European Fencing Confederation.

“It really is a wonderful day. Everything went as it should, the fencing, the energy, the feeling. It all just hung together and that was what came out. Fantastic, truly incredible feeling. ”
