Right now, Corona is on everyone’s lips. China has forced millions of people into home quarantine. Israel has taken drastic measures to keep the spread of infection down by, for example, closing the border to all tourists and forcing all Israelis who have been abroad in home quarantine. In Israel, the entire tourism industry is now on its knees and there is growing fear of the economic consequences for the country’s economy. The United States has declared the country a state of emergency. Denmark has closed schools and kindergartens, banned gatherings of more than 100 people, asked people to stay at home and closed the borders.

There is still no vaccine or treatment for the dreaded virus that has spread across the globe, writes Times of Israel.

Now a well-known false conspiracy theory is also spreading: the Jews are behind Corona.

According to Alex Friedfeld, a researcher at the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) Center on Extremism, extremists already in January began spreading the false conspiracy theory that Corona was created by a Jewish clique. (Read more of MIFF’s articles on ADL’s studies of anti-Semitism in the world and in Denmark here.)

-The most popular false conspiracy theory is that Jews use Corona to make money. They claim Jews made Corona and will benefit from the markets in the event of a collapse through insider trading, Friedfeld says.

According to Friedfeld, the false conspiracy theory has not only been spread via extremist platforms via, for example, Telegram and Gab, it has also been spread via, for example, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

-What I find interesting is that the same False conspiracy theories – especially anti-Semitic ones also pop up on social media, says Friedfeld.

In some cases, the false conspiracy theories have even been spread through state-sponsored television networks – for example in Turkey.

A guest on Turkish television said that “Jews, Zionists have organized and constructed the new Coronavirus as a biological weapon like bird flu” to “design the world, seize lands and castrate the world’s population.”

In addition to spreading the false conspiracy theory that Corona is a Jewish invention, some white nationalists have also exploited the virus outbreak to advance their agenda.

-Their false conspiracy theory is that Corona will destroy society as we know it and that they will be able to build their white ethno state on the ashes of the world we know today, says Friedfeld.

Another false conspiracy theory that is being spread is that Corona is a conspiracy between Jews and Zionists and the so-called Deep State to overthrow President Donald Trump.

-It is the old and well-known conspiracy theories and stereotypes against Jews that are dusted off and adapted to the Corona crisis, says Friedfeld

This is not the first time Jews have become scapegoats for a global pandemic. One of the worst examples is the plague in Europe in the 14th century, where the Jews were accused of poisoning the water in the wells. This led to violent persecution of Jews in 1348-1351.

Asked how they explain that the Jews were behind Corona, Friedfeld explains that they do not explain it “I do not think people think it through so far,” he says.
