The BDS movement (BDS) literally got a slap in the face after the United Arab Emirates decided to repeal their 1972 decree to boycott Israel. The decision was made by Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as part of the normalization process cooperation/' target='_blank'>cooperation-with-israel/' target='_blank'>cooperation-with-israel/' target='_blank'>with Israel – also called the Abraham Agreement, writes Avi Benlolo – a Canadian human rights activist and former president and CEO of Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center in The Algemeiner.

Although Israel has managed to survive despite the Arab boycott and has become a regional economic superpower, the Emirates’ decision has great symbolic significance because it is a clear signal that the Emirates want trade relations cooperation/' target='_blank'>cooperation-with-israel/' target='_blank'>cooperation-with-israel/' target='_blank'>with Israel, Benlolo writes. The Emirates’ lifting of the boycott means that there will be an effective normalization of trade between the two countries. Imagine that Emirati residents will soon be able to buy the well-known Israeli snack Bamba in their local supermarket, Benlolo adds.

Normalization cooperation/' target='_blank'>cooperation-with-israel/' target='_blank'>cooperation-with-israel/' target='_blank'>with Israel is a violation of the traditional mandate of most Arab countries since Israel’s establishment as a modern state in 1948, Benlolo emphasizes. The Khartoum Resolution of 1967 – read more about it here, set the stage for political and economic boycott of Israel. It was during the summit following Israel’s unexpected victory in the Six Day War that the Arab League declared the infamous “three nos.”: No peace cooperation/' target='_blank'>cooperation-with-israel/' target='_blank'>cooperation-with-israel/' target='_blank'>with Israel, no recognition of Israel, no negotiation cooperation/' target='_blank'>cooperation-with-israel/' target='_blank'>cooperation-with-israel/' target='_blank'>with Israel.

The boycott of Israel united the Arab states in the region with the UN and anti-Israel resolutions intensified and became the norm – read MIFF’s articles on the UN here. But Israel’s peace agreement with Egypt in 1979 and then with Jordan in 1994 weakened the Arab alliance – and thus also their boycott of the Jewish state. Yet there was no love between Israel and its new “friends” – it was a cold peace and trade between the countries was minimal.

The boycott campaign against Israel was intensified again after the failed Oslo Accords and Palestinian terror against the Jewish state was also intensified – read MIFF’s articles on the Oslo Accords here. Also read MIFF’s articles on how Danish aid to the Palestinian authorities has indirectly helped to finance terrorism against Israelis.

Palestinian terror failed to bring Israel to its knees, so the Palestinian leadership stepped in to support an intense international honor violation and boycott campaign in an attempt to criminalize Israel – also called BDS. Part of the BDS campaign was to brand Israel as an “apartheid state” – read MIFF’s articles on the apartheid lie against Israel here. A recurring theme in the false apartheid accusations against Israel is comparing the Jewish state with South Africa. Throughout the West, students on the university campus lobbied for BDS and tried to deceive the international community by calling Israel a racist state, Benlolo writes. Also read MIFF’s article: BDS founder does not hide the goal that Israel should not be a Jewish state.

While the international BDS campaign continues to spread on university campuses around the world and promotes anti-Semitism and hatred of the Jewish state, Benlolo believes that the Emirates’ peace agreement cooperation/' target='_blank'>cooperation-with-israel/' target='_blank'>cooperation-with-israel/' target='_blank'>with Israel and their visible establishment of direct ties between the two countries will be a death blow to the BDS movement. Trade and cooperation/' target='_blank'>cooperation between Israel and its Arab neighbors is inevitable and it will become clear when more countries sign a peace agreement with the Jewish state, Benlolo believes.

The enemies of peace will inevitably try to demonize and marginalize Israel. But their hopes and dreams will be shattered with every El Al plane landing in Abu Dhabi and every Emirati jet landing in Tel Aviv. We have a real chance for peace and friendship. Maybe the Palestinian Authority (PA) can even learn something about creating peace – time will tell. Read MIFF’s articles on the Emirates and Israel here.
