According to Australian media, Australia will formally recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The country’s National Security Committee approved it on Monday, and the decision will be ratified at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday. The official confirmation is expected on Wednesday, writes the Jerusalem Post and Times of Israel.
As early as October, the new Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, said he was open to moving the country’s embassy to Jerusalem. After winning the election in August, he was invited to Jerusalem by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
However, the country’s embassy will not be moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem immediately, according to Australian media. The reason is the financial cost. It is estimated that it will cost 1.7 billion. to move the embassy. So in the beginning a consulate is opened in Jerusalem.
