The Israeli government’s Corona cabinet on Monday approved several new restrictions to bring an increase in Corona cases to life, the newspaper the Algemeiner writes.

At a cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was facing a “systemic increase in morbidity” and outlined new restrictions that could be introduced.

Netanyahu highlighted four options in the fight against Corona – focusing on enforcing fines, using digital tools to track infected people, shutting down specific high-infection areas and banning assembly.

The Corona Cabinet decided to lift the fine for not wearing a sanitary napkin from 200 to 500 shekels – the decision must be approved by the Knesset before it can enter into force.

It was also decided to close companies that do not follow the current guidelines. It was also decided to prepare the health service to be able to treat up to 2,000 patients in respirators.

The Corona crisis is also continuing to take hold in the Israeli economy. According to figures from the Israeli National Insurance Institute, unemployment benefits will expire for 469,314 people in August, 373,817 people will already lose their benefits in July – they will then be left without income.

Labor and Social Affairs Minister Itzik Shmuli stated that “half a million Israelis will end up as new poor.”

Shmuli said the government should expand unemployment benefits to “avoid a situation where the same group of hundreds of thousands of Israelis ends up below the poverty line.”

He criticized the government for not discussing the current crisis and said: “Some believe the economy will recover on its own.”

At the time of writing, 4,848 are Corona infected and 307 have died. About 294 people were added to the list of infected over the weekend.
