The Israeli government has approved the appointment of Amira Oron as Israel’s new ambassador to Cairo. This makes Oron the first woman to represent the Jewish state in Egypt, according to the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Oron, who speaks fluent Arabic, has previously held another position at the Embassy in Cairo. She has also headed the Israeli embassy in Ankara, Turkey for two years. She is taking over as ambassador to Egypt after David Govrin took office in 2016, but he and his staff were recalled for eight months in 2017 due to unspecified security threats.

The government also accepted the appointment of Bat Eden Kite as head of the Israeli embassy in Turkmenistan, according to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

– I welcome the appointment of the two ambassadors. They are experienced, professional and valued diplomats. I am confident that they will promote bilateral relations between Israel and the countries to which it has been designated, “said Israeli Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi.
