On Friday, September 4, US President Donald Trump hosted a summit between Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Kosovo’s Prime Minister Avdulla Hoti. With US mediation, the two countries have agreed to normalize economic relations, twelve years after Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia in 2008.

As part of the package of agreements that the Trump administration has put in place, Serbia will move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem by July 2021. Before then, the Serbs will open a representative office in the city. Serbia could thus become the first European country to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to the capital of Israel.

But Kosovo can overtake Serbia. On Friday, it was also announced that Kosovo and Israel will recognize each other and establish diplomatic relations. In a conversation with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Kosovo’s Prime Minister Huti said the embassy would be located in Jerusalem.

– The first country with a Muslim majority will open an embassy in Jerusalem. As I have said in recent days, the circle of peace and recognition of Israel is expanding and we expect more countries to join, Netanyahu said.
