Four million visited Israel in 2018

Today – Sunday, December 30 – tourist number four million arrived in Israel in 2018. Never before have so many tourists visited Israel, writes the Jerusalem Post.

There has been a huge growth in tourism in Israel in recent years. In 2017, cooperation/' target='_blank'>cooperation-documents-were-signed/' target='_blank'>for the first time, over three million people visited the country in a year. The event was marked, among other things, by, tourist number three million was given a tour of Jerusalem by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Today, tourist number four million was received by Israeli Tourism Minister Yariv Levin at Ben Gurion Airport.

Times of Israel elaborates on growth:

Compared to 2017, the number of tourists has increased by 13%. Tourism in Israel contributes enormously to the Israeli economy and employment, and revenues in 2018 exceed NIS 24 billion (41.6 billion DKK). And many tourists become “ambassadors of good will” – ambassadors for Israel to their home countries.

Yariv Levin believes that it is the revolutionary efforts of the tourism authorities in Israel that are causing one record to be broken after another. Among other things, he tells that the whole marketing strategy has changed; new routers have been developed with the support of the ministry; new cooperation/' target='_blank'>cooperation agreements have been entered into with some of the largest tourism agencies in the world. Among the efforts has been a campaign for NIS 350 million (DKK 606.5 million) to market Israel as a travel destination in i.a. USA, Germany, Russia, Italy, UK, China, Ukraine, Brazil, and the Philippines. In addition, NIS 145 million (DKK 251.3 million) was given as a subsidy to entrepreneurs who could increase the accommodation supply. Nearly 4,000 new rooms were built this year.

Tourist Profiles

More and more Chinese tourists are visiting Israel, with over 100,000 Chinese visits in 2018. The largest group of tourists are Americans with 813,000 visitors. France follows with 320,000 and Russia with 303,000. According to Ambassador to Denmark Benny Dagan on Facebook, the number of tourists from Denmark has increased by 18% from 2017 to 2018 (the number is not disclosed).

61% of visitors were Christians while Jewish tourists accounted for 22%; 12% had no religious affiliation – and then there were 1.8% Muslims, 0.6% Buddhists, 0.5% Hindus, and 0.1% Baha’is.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, 40% of tourists have previously visited Israel – this indicates that Israel is a popular travel destination. Jerusalem is the most visited destination … and a few months ago Euromonitor named Jerusalem the fastest growing tourism destination in the world.
