Thanks to a collaboration between Israeli and Palestinian doctors, a six-month-old Palestinian girl from the Gaza Strip was rescued at the Israeli hospital Wolfson in Holon, writes the newspaper Jerusalem Post.

Six-month-old Lama, who was born with a serious heart defect, had received medical treatment in the Gaza Strip since being diagnosed by Palestinian pediatric cardiologist Fayez Shakalia.

The Palestinian doctor had received training in the form of medical treatment from the organization Save a Child’s Heart, which brings doctors from the Palestinian territories and underdeveloped countries to Israel, to train cooperation/' target='_blank'>cooperation-with-israel/' target='_blank'>cooperation-with-israel/' target='_blank'>with Israeli medical experts. The organization also brings children from all over the world to Israel to provide them with life-saving heart surgeries. So far, Save a Child’s Heart has helped over 5,000 children from 62 different countries.

One of them is Lama, who had been diagnosed with a heart defect that results in abnormal blood flow between two of the main arteries that are connected to the heart. It is a condition that requires medical intervention.

Her treatment went painlessly at the local hospital in Gaza until something went wrong with a cardiac catheterization, which led to Lama being immediately transferred to an Israeli hospital for open heart surgery.

Urgent requests were sent to Israeli authorities to give Lama permission to enter Israel, while separate inquiries were sent to Palestinian authorities to allow her to leave with her mother, to Wolfson Hospital. in Israel for life-saving treatment.

By agreement on both sides, the Lama was transported by ambulance through the Erez border crossing and from there transported on to the hospital in Holon.

– After talking to Dr. Shakalia, we understood that Lama had to have surgery as soon as possible, says Dr. Alona Raucher Sternfeld, head of pediatric cardiology at Wolfson Hospital. She says the collaboration saves lives:

– We have been collaborating with Dr. Shakalia and other partners in Gaza for years, and thanks to that collaboration, over 2,500 Palestinian children, both from the West Bank and Gaza, have received treatment from us over the years.

Lama’s open heart surgery was successful and the six-month-old baby is now in the intensive care unit of the hospital.

– I was very nervous about getting here in the beginning. This is the first time I’m in Israel, but everything is perfect now. My baby is rescued and the doctors take care of everything, says Lama’s mother. The family will return to Gaza when the Lama is discharged.

– This story is a perfect description of Israel, a generous country with modern technology and knowledge. We will continue to carry out the ancient commandment of the Jewish people to practice Tikun Olam , which means “healing the world,” says Canadian-Israeli philanthropist Sylvan Adams, one of Save a Child’s Hearts greatest donors.
