The rocket fired at Israel from the Gaza Strip on Monday was one of the most powerful ever fired by Islamists in Gaza. The rocket flew almost 120 km before hitting and totally damaging a home in central Israel. Seven people, including two infants, were injured in the attack.

For more than a decade, the Islamist militant group, Hamas, has built up a large arsenal of rockets and grenades. It started with simple short-range rockets, but now it has developed into powerful rockets that can actually hit anywhere in Israel, writes Yedioth Ahronoth.

Hamas took full control of the Gaza Strip in 2007, which led to Israel and Egypt launching a blockade of the area. The blockade was intended to prevent the terrorist group from gaining access to more weapons, but despite the blockade and three wars cooperation/' target='_blank'>cooperation-with-israel/' target='_blank'>cooperation-with-israel/' target='_blank'>with Israel – the most recent in 2014 – Hamas has managed to expand its weapons arsenal.

Through a network of smuggling tunnels along the border with Egypt, Hamas has succeeded in seizing advanced weapons and raw materials – despite Egypt closing most of the tunnels in 2013. Last year, Hamas boss Yahiya Sinwar boasted that the group had more rockets than they had before the Gaza war in 2014.
