IMPACT-se is an institute that examines different countries’ school curricula against UNESCO’s standards for peace and tolerance in education. Not long ago, IMPACT-se published a new report with a hundred examples of new Palestinian textbooks. In total, they have examined 202 books for grades 1 to 11. The school books were published between 2016 and 2019 and are the second largest update of Palestinian school books, after self-government was created. Prior to the Oslo Accords, schoolchildren in the West Bank and East Jerusalem were taught the Jordanian curriculum, while schoolchildren in Gaza were taught according to the Egyptian curriculum.

Palestinian curriculum has previously been widely criticized.

-It was expected that the new curriculum would be more moderate than that used between 2000 and 2016. But unfortunately, our analysis shows that the new textbooks are even more radical than before, with a clear deterioration in the content of in relation to UNESCO standards, writes IMPACT-se.

Their summary is gloomy: ”Violence, martyrdom and jihad are systematically included in all age groups and subjects in a more comprehensive and sophisticated way, including the whole spectrum of extreme nationalist ideas and Islamist ideologies that go into the teaching of even mathematics and science such as physics, chemistry and biology.

The possibility of peace cooperation/' target='_blank'>cooperation-with-israel/' target='_blank'>cooperation-with-israel/' target='_blank'>with Israel is rejected. It is completely absent in the books to give legitimacy to the historical Jewish presence in what is today Israel and the Palestinian territories, or to today’s Jewish presence in Israel. ”

Peace rejected
Peace work cooperation/' target='_blank'>cooperation-with-israel/' target='_blank'>cooperation-with-israel/' target='_blank'>with Israel has previously been a theme in some Palestinian textbooks. This is now completely gone. The Oslo process from 1993 is only mentioned once and then as a neutral data point. In the past, the syllabus has reproduced more completely from the letter that Yassir Arafat wrote to Yitzhak Rabin in 1993, but now some quotes that were previously used have been omitted – not least Arafat’s statement that it was “a historic event that opens up a new era of coexistence, free from violence and all other acts that endanger peace and stability. “

All mention of peace negotiations since the Oslo Accords have been removed from the new curriculum. “There is no hint of the possibility of resolving the conflict cooperation/' target='_blank'>cooperation-with-israel/' target='_blank'>cooperation-with-israel/' target='_blank'>with Israel peacefully.”

Jewish history in the land area between the Mediterranean and the Jordan River is presented as a falsification of history, and Jewish holy sites are depicted as Muslim areas exploited by the Zionists.

Increased radicalization
The new textbooks “indoctrinate to death and martyrdom, and they use various tools to convince children to risk their lives as martyrs . ” Over the years, the need to continue the struggle is emphasized – with words like revolution, rebellion, ribat and jihad. Early Islamic history, when Arab armies conquered large parts of the Middle East and North Africa, is used as inspiration in the “national struggle”. Students are reminded that the battle will be rewarded in paradise with 72 virgins to marry. Those who work for personal success and career are portrayed as warriors.

The message that the goal is to “return” to Israel itself (within the 1949 ceasefire lines) is “dramatically reinforced” in the new textbooks. The reading syllabus teaches the children that the struggle for liberation does not end with the West Bank and Gaza – the whole of Israel becomes Palestine. In a poem, it is suggested what fate awaits the Jews living in Israel: “exterminate the remnants of foreigners” after “those in power have been exterminated”.

Jews and Israel are demonized to a greater extent than before. Anti-Semitism is more prevalent. The State of Israel is widely described as “the Zionist occupation” throughout the curriculum. When the name “Israel” is used, it is often quoted to delegitimize the state of Israel.

The texts in the textbooks characterize everything that is Israeli as criminal. Offensive terms are used in descriptions of Israel and Jews. The Jewish / Israeli “other” is presented with undertones of alienation and threats. The Jews are being blackmailed all the way back from the political rivalry with the Prophet of Islam. No objective information is given about Israel or Jews, which can be a counterweight when the thoughts of the Palestinian children are shaped. “In short, there is no education in coexistence.”

So what does that have to do with you?
Palestinian curriculum and education are funded by your tax money. Both Denmark and Norway provide large sums of money in assistance to the Palestinian Authority (PA). Infinitum News has invited representatives from IMPACT-se to Norway to present their report to Storting politicians and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
