Yesterday was March 8 – Women’s International Match Day. In Norway, several marches for the cause of women were chosen to condemn Israel. As far as is known, no attention was drawn to how the culture and religion of Palestinian society affect the situation of women.
Two months ago, Palestinian Supreme Court Justice Mahmoud al-Habbash said:
“We have a law that says ‘Islamic law is the basis of the law’. Although we have signed the Women’s Convention, we are not bound by it at all – only in the case where it is in accordance with Islamic law.We are bound by international law where it does not conflict with our national heritage, religious heritage and our religion. The President has said what the government has said it, and we [the Supreme Sharia Council] have said it. “
The statement was taken from a clip posted on al-Habbash’s Facebook page on January 9, 2020, and translated by Palestinian Media Watch.
