A new poll conducted by the Palestinian organization Jerusalem Media and Communication Center (in Ramallah) shows that the Arab residents of the West Bank and Gaza are very dissatisfied with their own leaders and desperate for an election of a new president and legislature.

Asked which Palestinian politician or religious leader they trust the most, only 11.5 percent say it is President Mahmoud Abbas. 6.3 percent elect Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, while convicted terrorist Marwan Barghouti gets 8.4 percent. In total, 47.8 percent say they do not trust any Palestinian politicians or religious leaders.

The President of the Palestinian Authority (PA), Mahmoud Abbas, was elected in 2006 for a term of four years, but has now served 14 years. The reason is that the PA has not been willing to hold elections due to a bitter and violent conflict with the terrorist organization Hamas, which has had control of Gaza since 2007.

A large majority, 86.9 percent, answer that it is important to hold presidential elections. 82.9 percent believe it is important to hold elections to the Palestinian Legislative Assembly (PLC). 86.6 percent refuse to hold elections in the West Bank without doing so in Gaza. Only 10.5 percent say it’s okay.

Asked which political or religious parties or groups they trust the most, 28.2 percent of Fatah respondents (led by President Abbas) answer. Then Hamas follows 10.3 percent. The largest group of 41.1 percent answer that they do not trust any political or religious group.

There was a random sample of 1,200 Palestinians over the age of 18 (715 in the West Bank and 485 in the Gaza Strip) who were interviewed face to face on 19-23 March 2019. The answers from the survey were published on Tuesday 9 April (and written about on miff.no on April 11).
