History was written in Israeli politics on Thursday when an election law was implemented for the very first time. The law means that any member of the Knesset over a 21-day term can become prime minister – provided they manage to gather the necessary majority behind them, writes the Times of Israel.

It happens, according to the leader of Kahol Lavan Benny Gantz resigned Wednesday night to form a government. Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu has also given up on forming a government. No one has managed to get the support of at least 61 Knesset representatives, which is the necessary majority to form a government.

-We have reached the bottom of the history of the state of Israel, said President Reuven Rivlin about the situation in the country .

During the extra round, which lasts 21 days, those who have previously tried to become Prime Minister can also be elected. Thus, Benny Gantz and Benjamin Netanyahu are still in the running for prime minister.

If one of the Knesset members manages to get the support of at least 61 representatives, that person will be appointed Prime Minister by President Reuven Rivlin. Then the law says that the elected prime minister has 14 days to form a government, which must again be approved by the Knesset.

If this government is not approved, the 22nd National Assembly will be dissolved and Israel will have to implement a third election in a year. The same thing will happen if no one is appointed Prime Minister before December 21.

Another new election will cost Israeli society dearly. The bill for three consecutive elections could cost over 12 billion. Shekel. At the same time, the deadlocked political situation affects the economic development of the country.

Since the Knesset was dissolved and new elections were announced in December 2018, Israel has only had a transitional government. As a result, economic policy has stagnated, while the country’s debt and spending have risen. Until a new government is in place, a transitional government must work within the framework of the state budget for 2019, writes Yediot Ahronoth.
