Despite reports of a ceasefire, according to the Jerusalem Post and the Times of Israel, more than 60 rockets were fired at southern Israel overnight (Tuesday, March 26). At least 30 rockets were fired between 22 and 3.15. Rocket alarms were activated everywhere in Sderot and the regions of Eshkol, Hof Ashkelon and Shaar HaNegev.

The escalation between Hamas and Israel began on Monday, March 25, at about 5 in the morning when a long-range J80 rocket was fired from Rafiah in the southern Gaza Strip, hitting a private home approx. 120 km. away in the Mishmeret, north of Tel Aviv. Seven members of a family and a neighbor were injured. (Read in Ynet news about Hamas’ modern weapons arsenal – we are not talking about toys!)

The escalation from Gaza may be related to Hamas and others’ plans to push hundreds of thousands of people into riots to mark the one-year anniversary of The Great March of Return on March 30 (read about it in Danish here and here). There are also some who believe that Hamas wants to turn its anger against Israel’s counterattack, thereby shifting attention and energy from the burgeoning uprising against Hamas.

Israel went on the counterattack approx. 12 hours later, and hit Hamas targets in Shati, Beit Hanoun, Saja’iya and elsewhere in the Gaza Strip – military camps, rocket launchers, tunnels for the transport of weapons, etc. Particularly noteworthy are various parts of a Hamas military camp in Deir al-Balah (central Gaza Strip), parts of a Palestinian Islamic Jihad camp in Beit Lahiya, and various other Hamas military installations. Another target hit by Israeli jets was Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh’s office in the northern Gaza Strip’s Rimal, as well as a five-story building that served as an office for military meetings and as the headquarters of Hamas’ internal security forces – as well as a three-story building that served as the “secret headquarters” of Hamas’ security and intelligence departments.

Although no more rockets have arrived since 3.15 this morning, extensive restrictions have been introduced in the affected Israeli neighborhoods close to the border, e.g. the schools are closed and no work is allowed in the fields. There is also increased preparedness in Tel Aviv, Beersheba, Petah Tikva, Kiryat Gat, Rishon Lezion and other cities in large parts of the country. Several “Iron Dome” defenses have been put in place. The military has sent two more brigades to the areas closest to Gaza and approx. 1000 members of the reserve.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was in the United States for the AIPAC meeting and a meeting with US President Donald Trump. He has reportedly kept tight control over the operations, but has interrupted his stay to return to Israel.

Update from Cyril Malka: “Reinforcements on the way to Gaza” ..

  • A reinforcement of several hundred Merkava tanks is on its way to the border
  • In the cities near Gaza: Netivot, Ofakim, Ashkelon and in the regional councils of Merkhavim, Khof Ashkelon and Bnei Shimon, the army has banned all gatherings of more than 300 people.
  • Schools will be closed for today in Ashkelon and Beersheva and public services will be kept to a minimum.
  • In addition, public bomb shelters have remained open in Tel Aviv and other Central Israeli cities in the event of a conflict. (Cyril Malka)
