The first speaker at MIFF’s Israel Conference 2020 was the Israeli author Adi Schwartz, co-author of the book “The War to Return”. Schwartz should actually have been physically present in Norway, but due to the Corona crisis, he gave the lecture via video link from Israel.

– On the one hand, they say they just want freedom and independence, but when they are offered it, they say no, Schwartz said that Palestinian leaders have repeatedly turned down offers of their own state. .

Together with former Knesset member Einat Wilf, Schwartz is the author of the book The War of Return . The book became a bestseller in Israel, and was published in the spring in English translation. The War to Return has also come in Norwegian translation, with Infinitum News as publisher. The book is about the Palestinians’ political demands that millions of Palestinians who are descendants of Palestinian refugees from the 1948 War of Independence have the right to move into Israel.

The Palestinians are not just looking for their own state, Schwartz explained.

In The War of Return , the authors explain how the idea of ”the right to return” arose and how the UN, through UNRWA, created a permanent refugee problem instead of solving it. The book shows that the demands of the Palestinians have no legal basis. If the United States, the United Nations and the European Union make it clear to the Palestinians, it will promote peace and benefit both parties.

Schwartz touched on several conflicts in the 1940s that led to people ending up fleeing, but none of them are considered refugees today – except the Palestinians.

– What is so unique about the Palestinians? Why do we still have Palestinian refugees? And not only do we have Palestinian refugees, but the number is just rising. From 700,000 Palestinian refugees in 1948, we now have 5.5 million registered refugees, said the Israeli author.
