Benjamin Netanyahu has been the Prime Minister of Israel for the past ten years. He was also Prime Minister from 1996 to 1999. Now he is in an intense election campaign to be re-elected for a new term. Netanyahu says he will not resign – even if he is indicted in corruption cases.

Netanyahu rarely talks about who could be his successor as Israeli prime minister, but he did so recently, sources told the Internet site Walla. Internally in his own Likud party, Netanyahu has worked actively to prevent anyone else from becoming a threat to his leadership position. Nor are Likud politicians mentioned by Netanyahu.

“There are two people who I think are fit to lead the state of Israel – Yossi Cohen and Ron Dermer,” Netanyahu told some of his staff.

Yossi Cohen (57) is Netanyahu’s former national security adviser (2013-2016) and the man he appointed as Mossad’s boss in 2016. Cohen grew up in a religious Jewish family in Jerusalem. After completing his military service, he chose Mossad as his career path. In 2002, he became head of the agent department at Mossad.

“Cohen was considered one of the most brilliant recruiters in Mossad’s history,” writes Ronen Bergman in the book Rise and Kill First . Cohen managed to get agents inside Hezbollah and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards. From 2011 to 2013, Cohen was Vice President of Mossad. For many years, he has been leading Israel’s struggle to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Ron Dermer, 48, has been Israel’s ambassador to Washington since 2013. Prior to that, he served as an adviser to Netanyahu’s office for four years.

According to Walla, Dermer is not expected to have an interest in a political career after completing his ambassadorial post. The website’s journalists/' target='_blank'>journalists believe that Cohen is more likely to choose a top political job, although he denies it is relevant at this time.
